What Does It Really Cost to Own a Kei Truck?

The sticker price is only part of the picture. Here is a realistic look at what a kei truck costs in its first year, based on what our customers actually pay.

Purchase price

Most imported kei trucks in our inventory sit in the mid four figures to low five figures, depending on year, mileage, drivetrain, and body type. Specialty upfits like dump beds and cranes carry a premium over a standard bed.

Delivery

We charge a flat $510 for delivery anywhere in the continental United States. No mileage surcharge and no surprise fees at drop-off. Details are on the shipping page.

Titling and registration

Budget for your state’s title fee, sales or use tax, and plate fee. This varies widely by state and is the single largest variable after the purchase price. Your import packet ships with the truck so the DMV visit is straightforward.

Insurance

Kei trucks are usually insured as either a standard used vehicle or as farm/off-road equipment, depending on how your state classifies them. Premiums are typically low because values and speeds are low, but call your agent before you buy rather than after.

Fuel

A 660cc three-cylinder returns roughly 35-45 mpg in ordinary use. For most owners this is the cheapest line item on the list.

Maintenance

Plan on routine oil changes, filters, brake service, and timing belt intervals like any small engine. Parts are inexpensive and widely available for Suzuki and Daihatsu in particular. Our maintenance schedule guide walks through the intervals.

The takeaway

Between fuel economy, low insurance, and cheap consumables, a kei truck is one of the least expensive utility vehicles you can run. The costs to plan for are the ones that happen once: delivery and titling.
